Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night is a non-traditional yet festive way to celebrate the holidays. Kline’s composition, in which the audience members become participants, is intended to be heard outdoors during the month of December. Each participant gets one of four tracks of music in the form of a CD, cassette, or mp3. Together all four tracks create Unsilent Night. The participants play their track through a boom box, or anything that amplifies music (the louder the better), and all start their track simultaneously. The piece takes 45 minutes, during which the participants are led on a carefully planned walk through their city. Each participant will hear a different version of the piece, and every part of the walk will create different aural experiences (going through alleyways, open streets, crowded or empty areas). The overall effect is described as “a dreamy fruitcake of parts, tranquil even through its anarchy” (Los Angeles Times).

Following the performance of Unsilent Night, audience members will have the option of coming back to the Music Gallery for a festive fundraiser, complete with warm beverages and a performance by the O’Pears, a hauntingly beautiful female a cappella trio, made up of Meg Contini, Jill Harris and Lydia Persaud. The group arranges original music and old favourites to showcase their unmatchable blend and tight harmonies, with a diverse repertoire of Folk, R&B, Celtic, and Bluegrass music. They recently released their debut EP, Our Own. The O’Pears’ performance at the Music Gallery will showcase their experimental, improvisational, and darker side.
