Everyone's a DJ
Everyone's a DJ, the monthly party presented by local DJ Matt Blair and originally hosted at Tiger Bar, will return to its new home at Disgraceland on Saturday, 9 August 2008. As always, the night will feature a total of sixteen DJs - rookies and veterans alike - playing twenty-minute sets each. There will be no restrictions on genre, and no experience is required.
Blair launched the series at Tiger Bar at the end of 2007, on the quiet Friday night between Christmas and New Year's Eve. When the bar closed in May of this year, the party headed north to Disgraceland, a brand new venue run by former Tiger Bar manager Tyler Taverner and local DJ Shawn MacDonald. "This will be our third party at Disgraceland," Blair says, "and we're really looking forward to it. We're seeing a lot of new faces, both on the decks and in the crowd. People who are coming out to see their friends, or just stopping in off the street, are loving the idea so much that they're signing up for future nights on the spot."
DJs appearing at this month's edition include DJ Belcher, DJ Björn Borg, Decade Selector, DJ DJ Tanner, Dynamite Chris Wright, James Fraser, Louis Lessard, DJ Mr. Peanut, Sofi P, K Sawyer Paul, DJ Pressplay, DJ Rilakkuma, This is Exploding, Vijay, DJ Phil Ville, and Blair himself. Some of them are veteran DJs, others are new to the clubs, and a few have never spun before. A number of the performers who have appeared at Everyone's a DJ in the past have gone on to launch their own nights at other venues.
Everyone's a DJ is hosted on the second Saturday of every month. DJs are booked on a "first come, first served" basis, with a set number of spaces each month reserved for people who have never appeared at the series before. Details on each party will be listed at mattblair.ca, and all those who are interested in spinning at a future night are invited to get in touch via the website.
Disgraceland is located at 965 Bloor Street West, near Ossington Station. Matt Blair is a Toronto-based DJ whose past and present credits include Blow Up, Wavelength, Babylon Telecom, Yo! Remember the 90s?, Eat Your Greens, and the "Just" series of charity marathons hosted by Indiepolitik, the community organization that he founded in 2005.
