Trevor Noah surprised staff at Toronto restaurant when he showed up for a late lunch

Trevor Noah was in Toronto doing shows at Scotiabank Arena over the weekend, and while he was here he was sampling the fare at local restaurants.

While he may have started out with poutine for a quintessentially Canadian snack over his stay, one of his more recent stops was a taste of home for him: South African restaurant Plan B Burgers.

In addition to burgers, the spot serves South African classics boerewors and braai.

The stand-up star and Daily Show host's visit on Sunday took Plan B Burgers and owner Haroun Hassen completely by surprise when he showed up around 5:30 p.m. for what he says was a late lunch.

"I saw the black SUV pull up and I walked up to the door. I saw two security guys get out the front door, opened the rear doors for someone to get out," Hassen tells blogTO.

"At that moment I saw him and I was beyond ecstatic and welcomed him. He hugged me, said he was glad and happy to come and get a taste of home."

Noah was accompanied by two colleagues, one of whom was his best friend. He ordered the boerewors, pap (a kind of cornmeal porridge) and chakalaka (veggie stew), which is a typical combination of items eaten together.

"He smiled and was happy, took a few pics with customers. He was very humble and down to earth," says Hassen.

"He asked for Shamiema, our head chef and my wife, and he told her the food was incredible and just like home."

While Trevor Noah has risen to prominence as host of The Daily Show, it was actually just announced that he'll soon be stepping down. He's been here in Toronto touring as part of his Back To Abnormal World Tour.

"For all of us at Plan B as the owners and staff, having Noah visit us as the only South African restaurant in Toronto was so amazing because just like us he comes from humble beginnings in Johannesburg, South Africa," says Hassen.

"He finished up, told us we could take some pics outside. Hugged us and wished us success for our business, and he's proud of what we do and that he looks forward to his next visit."
