Let's Talk Trash
With the snow all melted away, Toronto has come face to face with the 6 months of refuse that was hiding underneath. It's everywhere you turn and it's got to go! Thoughts of sunny summer days are becoming easier to visualize, but are marred by the sheer amount of waste clinging to fences, gutters, alleyways and parks. The garbage hanging around the city isn't just for city cleaners to get rid of. It's our responsibility as members of this community to bend down and pick something up.
That's why it's really quite excellent that Mayor Miller has once again announced a community clean up day. It all starts Friday April 22 with a 20-minute makeover. At 2pm, make your way outside to clean up around your work place. Pick up some garbage, chat with your coworkers about Miller's fab hairdo and his passion for this glorious city and before you know it you'll be back at your desk working for the weekend.
But, it doesn't end there. Saturday April 23 is Community Clean Up Day. Buckle up your overalls, put on a pair of gloves and head out into your backyard, alleyway or curbside. If there isn't enough to keep you busy around your home, make your way to the nearest park. You can sign up with your friends and neighbours and if someone has already committed to that area - they can still use your help.
Last year it was amazing to see the amount of people around my 'hood slugging around garbage bags, whistling happily and marveling at their efforts at the end of the day. But, it's not just this day that requires your attention. Any time you see litter, pick it up! The city has instituted several environment days across the GTA. The objective is to aid residents with recycling or properly disposing of unwanted items.
There's a lot you can do to help keep Toronto beautiful and taking part in community events will show you just how easy it really is. If you need to report an overflow or garbage or a general litter hot spot call 39-CLEAN (392-5326)
