Rediscovering Bombay Palace

Bombay PalaceThere's no shortage of takeout Indian food in Toronto but for a quick fix it's hard to beat the ol' standby Bombay Palace.

Read my review of Bombay Palace in the restaurants section.

Rats Invade Happy Seven?

Rat Happy SevenDoes Happy Seven (one of Toronto's most favourited late night Chinese restaurants) have a rat problem?

According to Jesse Ship, Arts Editor of Format Magazine, it just might. He took what he says is a photo of a rat in the window of this popular Chinatown restaurant on his way to work this morning.

In his words: I was just walking past happy Seven today on Spadina and snagged images of a rat in the window on my cell phone, sitting right next to the health inspector sign. The restaurant wasn't open yet.

Here's a closer look: Update! A video that confirms this is a rat has now been posted on Vimeo. It's embedded below.

Ruckus MagazineRuckus Magazine, an online publication aimed at student artists in the GTA, launched last week at CineCycle.

Created by grads and current students at York University, the web site is still a work in progress but ultimately plans to feature local artist profiles, info about grants and art focused events, news, reviews and event previews in all arts disciplines from poetry to dance.

Earlier today I connected with Senior Editor Carl Hiehn who filled me in on the Ruckus story and plans for the future. Our Q&A is below.

Toronto T-Shirts - Looking for Inspiration Beyond the Needle

Toronto t-shirtsIs it just me or have a number of designers emerged recently hawking Toronto themed t-shirts? The aptly named T-Dot Clothing is one such entrant that's riding this wave, selling $35 tees like the above on their web site.

Unfortunately, like the Toronto t-shirts on sale at Urban Outfitters, I find many include cliched CN Tower-themed images . I'd love to see some more creative thinking and inspiration drawn from life beyond a Toronto Tourism marketing brochure.

Bacchus Gets a Makeover, Chino Becomes Manhattan

Bacchus ParkdaleBacchus, the venerable Parkdale roti shop (and one of the best in the city) has a new look. Gone is the uber casual environs and Caribbean blue walls and in their place is a surprisingly stylish setup that includes white leather seats, modern wood tables and fancy chairs.

Purified by FireI just wrapped up the first part of my Nuit Blanche in Liberty Village (the southwest part of Zone C). The area is still packed which kind of surprises me given it's not one of the more accessible neighbourhoods by foot or transit.

There's lots to see here beyond the "spoiler" I posted on Friday. At top is Purified by Fire, an installation by Matt Suib that has taken over a number of second and third story windows in the Liberty Market Building. It looks really sharp. All that's missing is a bit of smoke.
