"The Best Corner in the World"

Yonge & Bloor ConstructionAfter several months of lane closures, holes in the road, sidewalk blockages and plenty of excess "caution ribbon motif", it's no wonder Torontonians are getting fed up with the veritable clusterfuck that is Yonge & Bloor.

Lauded by the new, entirely over-hyped 1 Bloor condos as the "best corner in the world", they'd be hard pressed to even define it as a corner at this point, with fences and pylons blocking nearly every passage through the intersection. I've taken great joy (and an equal amount of shame) in reading blogger bstewart23 tearing the intersection a new one every so often.

More photos and excerpts of his frustration after the jump.

Get Your Garden On

Garden
Despite the rather unruly weather we've seen over the past couple days, Spring is well underway. The mounds of snow are starting to melt (well, most of them, anyway), and if you look hard enough, the first bits of green are starting to make an appearance.

Just in time, since the Guerilla Gardeners are having their first meet-up of the season tomorrow, to kick off their annual campaign of city-wide beautification. Their mission, "Without permit or license, we plant seeds and seedlings in all those neglected corners of public space."

CN Tower Glass Elevators Coming Soon

CN Tower
The chaps at the CN Tower have announced that a week from today, April 9, they'll begin running new glass floor elevators to propel visitors to the top of the tower. (No word on whether the elevators will continue to rise from there)

They also claim these are the world's highest and North America's first use of such elevators and will give riders a 5+ square foot view of the ground they'd be plummeting to if it weren't for the mere 2.5 inches of glass holding them up.

Bax Bears Invade Toronto

Bax Bears World Tour Toronto
While it might not be worth calling in the army for, the Bax Bears World Tour has taken on Toronto in force at the Keep Six Contemporary gallery.

The tour marks the launch of the new DIY (Design-it-Yourself) Munny-like toys, the Bax Bears in Toronto. As part of the event, gallery owner and curator Rafi Ghanaghounian gathered a collection of artists and designers from around the city to contribute their own creations.

Google's Free 411 Service Now Open to Toronto

Google 411
Nobody likes paying $0.75 per call just to get a phone number while on the road and getting nickel and dimed all the way to the bank by the phone companies. For me, it's always frustrating when I just want to make a reservation at a restaurant and can't remember the number, having to resort to finding a nearby phonebook in an age where wireless data is so freely available.

Thankfully, Google are doing what they do best: giving free access to information. Right now, you can call 1 (800) GOOG-411 (4664-411) and get access to every number Google has indexed on the Web, and instantly be connected (for free) to any number of your choosing. This includes any number from Toronto to across Canada and the US. It sounds too good to be true, but Google has pulled it off in such a seamless, slick way that really makes you wonder how this service can be free.

What do you get when you cram almost 2,000 gamers into Massey Hall with an orchestra and choir reliving some of their fondest memories? Well, for one, you get a hell of a lot of Nintendo DS pictochat sessions going during the intermission.

What can really be taken away from Video Games Live's near sell-out performance on Saturday night was a spectacular rendition of some of the most memorable and epic music in gaming. Keep on reading for impressions and video highlights of the show.
