Nuit Blanche Installations Start to Surface

Overflow Nuit BlancheAs artists gear up for this weekend's Nuit Blanche, already some installations are starting to appear around the city. In Liberty Village last night, I caught Overflow (pictured above) by Sobey Award winner Michel de Broin (also of pedal-powered car fame). Found next to the park on the east side of the neighbourhood (near the townhouses), this one's definitely worth a visit. Plus, it's great to see this long abandoned building come to life.

they were setting up things in the OPG/ING building at University & College on my ride to work this AM too....let alone Sam's post this morning at City Hall...

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather you not print photos of Nuit Blanche exhibits ahead of time. I'd prefer to be surprised.

yah - i live across from that 'installation' pictured. The park that that abandonned-looking building sits in has recently been completed with landscaping and such... but the entire park has some 6' high insta-fencing around it - has had that stuff up for at least a few years - this will be the Grand Opening of that Park if it is brought down for nuit blanche....

wrt pics: maybe a 'Spoilers' sign for any art pieces revealed before the big night.... i like to be spoiled myself, but others...

I wish/hope they would keep some of these exhibits up longer than just the one night of Nuit Blanche, I know it makes it a happening for it all to be on one night. But for some they could use the night as the unveiling of a piece but keep it up atleast for the weekend. You can't possible take it all in in one night, specially if your a tourist that isn't quite sure how to get to some of these areas.

Would make it worth while for me to come into the city, spend some tourist dollars, stay a day or two (trains don't run out of the city after midnight). Would be nice to get to see some of this great art that being shown, in our art funded society.

I've been admiring and photographing this building for almost 20 years and it's nice to see it hasn't been torn down like every other historically significant building around it. I hope it is enjoying its new lease on life - as
what? Does anybody know?

@ Jen:

I kind of feel the same way about the Nuit Blanche installations. For me it's like Art Christmas.

Saw this insulation last night from my balcony. At first I was like, How/Why the he11 is so much water pouring out at that window? Ahhh... lol.
Look forward to getting up close this weekend. Plus FINELY get access to East Liberty Park.

This is a huge spoiler, I wish you would have posted this behind a cut.

It's so much better in person I don't think it's a spoiler.

Niagra Falls. Picture or the real thing? Is a picture a spoiler?

NOPE NOPE NOPE

Its a 3D installation if a photo can ruin it for you it's not very good to begin with.

Maybe it can loose the surprise if youd rather not know whats there, but spoil it no? Never? Or ita ain't worth the trip to see it

THE BEATLES. Live in Concert or on DVD?

Posted by: jdawg at October 3, 2008 3:10 PM

Ha Ha Ha. Funny

Van Halen. David Lee Roth? or Sammy Hagar?

Posted by: VHdave at October 3, 2008 3:11 PM

@Sammy: A photo of a world-famous landmark that we all know from the age of 3 is hardly the same thing as an art installation that's part of a one-night celebration.

I didn't say it "ruined" it for me and I will probably check it out anyway. But as I said, for me Nuit Blanche is about surprise and discovery.

The artist's name is Michel de Broin, not de Brion. He was also behind the Shared Propulsion Car, which got pulled over by police last year on Queen Street. The driver was sent to court for operating an unsafe vehicle, because the car is powered by the passengers' own pedaling, but he won the case in court. In conclusion, de Broin is awesome.

Hah was just going to post a big SPOILER in this comment thread - can't say I'm surprised that someone beat me to the punch :) Nuit Blanche is all about discovery!
