toronto maple leafs proposal

Fans troll Toronto Maple Leafs after adorable fan proposal at game

You don't need me to remind you that the Toronto Maple Leafs haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1967, and though the team lacks championship rings in the modern era, at least one Leafs fan got a shiny new ring on Saturday.

The team's Instagram account called it a "W on the ice, W off the ice" as a fan proposed to his partner during the Leafs' home game at Scotiabank Arena versus the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, the Leafs and the couple both taking home a big win.

But all of that heartbreak has left many Leafs fans in a joking mood, with comments to the tune of "at least someone got a ring in that arena," and "they got a ring before the leafs did lol."

Buds fans are a pessimistic bunch, and it shows in the way they talk about even the union of two lovebirds.

"Well, they are Leafs fans... So they're incredibly patient people. So even if they both disappoint each other, they'll stay together because that's how Stockholm syndrome works," says one fan, while another chimed in to say "yeah they're divorced in the first round of marriage."

One even made light of another recent in-game proposal, albeit one that didn't exactly end as happily for the couple. "I'm guessing it wasn't a ring pop. IFYKYK. Congratulations! So nice to see good news stories."

Others attending the game with their significant others weren't as fortunate, like one fan who replied, "Aw, this is so sweet. I was at the game and I got half a burger from my boyfriend."

Honestly, if someone gave me half of their stadium-priced burger, I'd be smitten.
