Jays fans incensed over umpire ruling in loss to Rays

Blue Jays fans were mighty upset last night after a dubious call on a Jose Bautista slide cost the team a 3-0 start to the season. The controversial play took place in the ninth inning when Edwin Encarnacion hit a grounder to third with the bases loaded. The Rays tried to flip a double play, which misfired after second baseman Logan Forsythe flubbed his throw to first.

It seemed like the Jays had a good chance to snag a win after two runs scored and they went up 4-3. That's when the controversy started. The Rays entered a challenge of Jose Bautista's slide into second under a new rule, which the umpires ultimately sided with. That nullified Forsythe's bad throw and in a snap it was game over.

Manager John Gibbons unsurprisingly flipped out, saying "are we trying to turn the game into a joke? That cost us a chance to win a major-league game. It's really an embarrassment." He then followed that up with: "I guess we'll come out wearing dresses tomorrow. Maybe that's what everybody's looking for."

Jays fans followed his lead in taking to social media to gripe about the call, though by the time morning rolled around reaction to the call had turned into a full on debate over the interpretation of the new rule and Gibbons' reaction to the call.
