CineCycle Bike Culture

Bike culture. It's as much a part of biking in the city as the actual cycling. This week, as part of Toronto Bike Month, CineCycle begins a series of events that use local photography and film to illuminate that point.

Included are some bicycle art showings featuring historical, stenciled, and otherwise just really cool images. And in the theater, the best gems from their vast archives of bicycle related films can be seen. Event details can be found on their website.

Judging from the outside, you would never guess that the underground micro-cinema, housed in the 401 Richmond area, seats up to 80 people. It's also a coffee bar (with a vintage 1950s espresso maker) and bicycle repair shop (by appointment only).

For founder Martin Heath, bike culture is nothing new. He has operated CineCycle since the 1970s, aiming to incorporate his passion for film and biking. His very interesting bio explains his experience in Toronto's independent film scene and his CineCycle journey.
