Toronto events on October 14th, 2013

MUSIC | The Naked & Famous at The Phoenix
The Naked & Famous hit the Phoenix tonight! They bring their edgy Pop sound to us from New Zealand, and are fronted by Alisa Xayalith, who has a vocal and melodic approach reminiscent in many ways of Emily Haynes from Metric, but overall the band's vibe is definitely more ephemeral and "shoegazy". Their latest release, Rolling Waves just dropped last month, so those tracks will likely be front and centre in tonight's set list. Also on tonight's bill, The Colourist.
Phoenix Concert Theatre (410 Sherbourne Street) 8PM $28.50-$38.50

CULTURE | Ghost Tracking
Nothing like a historic TO venue for a Halloween-oriented event! Tonight at Casa Loma, a special evening tour that begins in the building's Library for some spooky tales and historical background with Michelle Desrochers, who will be the tour guide, and is also the Castle's Paranormal Representative. She will share some recordings of "electronic voice phenomena" (EVPs) that have been captured on the premises, and will help you decipher the supernatural content. Then there will be a "mini tour" with some free time for you to explore on your own.
Casa Loma (1 Austin Terrace) 7PM (arrive 6:45) $26.95

FOOD | Brewer's Backyard - Torontoberfest
This afternoon, the final Brewer's Backyard of the year - Torontoberfest - takes place. This event has attracted beer fanciers all Summer long, and always provides an enjoyable time outdoors with some great beers you likely haven't tried before and comestibles that pair nicely with them. Today's featured brewers are: Beau's, Black Oak and food will come from WVRST. Beau's will provide Lug Tread, Night Marzen, Octobock, and several others, while Black Oak will be serving up Oaktoberfest, and 10 Bitter Years. In keeping with the "Torontoberfest" theme WVRST has been invited to serve up an original selection of sausages and duck fat frites. Should be good.
Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Avenue) 12PM

THEATRE | The Killing Game
Art and Lies Productions presents Eugène Ionesco's The Killing Game, beginning tonight at the Annex Theatre. This theatre company prides itself on fresh and experimental approaches to presenting classic works. Tonight, one of Ionesco's last plays will be performed. The Killing Game is a dark comedic piece that takes place in a small town beset by a plague outbreak. Human nature in the face of crisis is examined and presented in a questionable light. This show runs until this Friday (no Tuesday performance).
Annex Theatre Toronto (730 Bathurst Street) 8PM $22 ($18 students)
