Queen's Park loses fight to preserve "heritage vista"
Queen's Park has lost its fight to stop a condo development from encroaching upon its "heritage vista." The view in question can be seen when travelling north on University Avenue, which leads directly towards the Ontario Legislature. At present, so the argument goes, from this perspective one has an unencumbered view of the historic structure (built in 1893).
So when the Ontario Municipal Board approved a proposal to replace the current Four Seasons Hotel on Avenue Road with 40+ storey condo towers, Queen's Park appealed the decision. Justice Alison Harvison Young of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled against this bid yesterday, saying in a report that despite the building's importance, that "does not, in itself, render the legal issues of significant importance to justify granting leave to appeal."
It remains to be seen whether or not the Legislative Assembly will take the matter to a higher court.
