Dada Life

Hot Ticket: Dada Life, Pissed Jeans, Los Campesinos!, Ghost, Ancient VVisdom, JJ Grey & Mofro

Live music picks for THURSDAY JANUARY 19 through TUESDAY JANUARY 23, 2012.

THURSDAY JANUARY 19 / DADA LIFE / THE HOXTON / 69 BATHURST / $20 / 19+
This one's for the electro-house crowd. Dada Life, the duo from Sweden, have been in the game since 2006, but they didn't reach true prominence until 2010, when they made it onto DJ Magazine's Top 100 list. Since then, their popularity has skyrocketed. When it comes to electronic music, I'm definitely more of a drum & bass man myself, but everyone likes a little electro-house now and then.

FRIDAY JANUARY 20 / PISSED JEANS / SNEAKY DEE'S / 431 COLLEGE / $19.75 / 19+

One of the perks of writing the Hot Ticket every week is the chance to listen to bands that I'm not overly familiar with, some of whom have names that make me do a double take. Pissed Jeans is a perfect example. You've really got to love that name. As for their music....well, it's not entirely up my alley, but if you're fan of hardcore punk, this is definitely the show for you. And hey, Sneaky Dee's is a great venue.

SATURDAY JANUARY 21 / LOS CAMPESINOS! / LEE'S PALACE / 529 BLOOR W / $20 / 19+

From hardcore punk on one night to sweet, awesome indie-pop rock the next. Los Campesinos! (another great name) is a seven-piece from Wales that draws their influence from bands such as Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, and Blur. It should also be noted that all seven members of the band have adopted the word "Campesinos!", exclamation mark and all, as their last names. That's Spanish for "peasant," in case you were wondering. It's a bit gimmicky, but neat nonetheless.

SUNDAY JANUARY 22 / GHOST / THE MOD CLUB / 722 COLLEGE / $19.20 / ALL AGES

Satanic lyrics! Nameless band members who perform in hooded robes! A lead singer who wears a skull mask and a cardinal outfit on stage! If these things appeal to you, then the Mod Club is where you want to be on Jan. 22, when Swedish melodic heavy metal band Ghost takes the stage. If you watch the above video, you can get an idea of what the show will be like. It's...interesting, for lack of a better word. Blood Ceremony and Ancient VVisdom will offer support.

SUNDAY JANUARY 22 / JJ GREY & MOFRO / HORSESHOE TAVERN / 368 QUEEN W / $19.38 / 19+

This has definitely been one of the more eclectic Hot Tickets in recent memory, and we close it off with a little bit of soul. JJ Grey & Mofro, from Jacksonville, Florida, play a smooth blend of soul and blues with a little bit of funk thrown in for good measure. Frontman JJ Grey has named Lynyrd Skynyrd and Otis Redding as influences on his music, and it shows.
