Bon Iver

Hot Ticket: Bon Iver, Openhearts Society, Anna Calvi, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Sunparlour Players

Live music picks for TUESDAY DECEMBER 6 through SATURDAY DECEMBER 10, 2011.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 6 / BON IVER / MASSEY HALL / 178 VICTORIA / $58.14 - $68.14 / ALL AGES

Indie rock darlings Bon Iver are coming back to Toronto for their second show of 2011, a mere three months after their first one. The band is currently touring in support of their self-titled sophomore album, which has received near-universal acclaim. It even scored the band a few Grammy nominations - not that the Grammys really have any relevance in this day and age, but still, good for them.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 7 / OPENHEARTS SOCIETY / THE PISTON / 937 BLOOR W / $10 / 19+

Remember that group from the 90s, The Spin Doctors? They were perhaps best known for the absurdly catchy tune "Two Princes" - you've heard it, even if you don't think you have. Well, the guitarist from that band, Eric Schenkman, is part of this trio from the east coast, which also consists of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir's Chris Brown and singer Sarah McDermott. Don't let Schenkman's previous fluff fool you - this is fine, fine music.

THURSDAY DECEMBER 8 / ANNA CALVI / LEE'S PALACE / 529 BLOOR W / $15 / 19+

Listen to Anna Calvi's work, and you'll come away amazed at the power in her voice and her incredible skill on the guitar. Her eponymous debut album was released earlier this year to much acclaim, and was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Music Prize, a very prestigious award for the best album to come out of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 9 / CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH / THE OPERA HOUSE / 735 QUEEN E / $20.50 / 19+

I'm going to make a bold prediction and say that this show could be the last truly great concert of 2011. And before you hate on me for saying this, keep in mind that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are an absolute joy to watch live. It doesn't hurt that they're one of the more consistent groups out there in terms of outright quality. Their third album, Hysterical, is fantastic stuff, and proof that they haven't missed a step since Some Loud Thunder came out in 2007.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 10 / SUNPARLOUR PLAYERS / THE GREAT HALL / 1087 QUEEN W / $13.50 / ALL AGES

If you've ever wanted to go to a concert and come away with a freshly-canned jar of jelly, then this is the show for you. Based in Toronto, the Sunparlour Players are an alt-country/folk band that have taken a different direction with their latest album, Us Little Devils. The album sees the band incorporate electronic elements and emphasize a more pop-rock sound. And they just happen to make and sell their own mustards and jellies. What a combination!
