MGMT Take Over The Mod Club Tonight

MGMT bring their Oracular Spectacular sound to The Mod Club tonight.

I had a chance to catch up with Ben Goldwasser, keyboardist for MGMT (pronounced management ) on the phone from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY in between sound checks for a brief Q&A.

How would you describe your music?

Ben: "It's basically '70s music in the future."

What's your favourite '70s artist?

Ben: "Chrome, an underrated San Francisco band."

Keep reading for more Q&A after the jump....

You're scheduled to play a lot of festivals this summer, including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Roskilde, Lollapalooza and Reading/Leeds. How do you view playing festivals compared to smaller gigs like at The Mod Club in Toronto?

Ben: "We've never played any big festivals, so it should be fun. It's nice to hang out and see other bands play. It's a lot of fun to play in a huge room full of people."

Who are you most stoked to see during these upcoming festivals?

Ben: "At Coachella, I'm looking forward to seeing Spiritualized, Kraftwork, Roger Waters and Aphex Twin."

I read in Rolling Stone that you listed Prince as one of your dream producers. I heard that he was just added to the Coachella line-up. This could be your big moment!

Ben: "No way! That's amazing! I'd be speechless. I wouldn't know what to say at all."

What's your favourite Prince tune?

Ben: "Pop Life."

How's pop life been treating you?

Ben: "Pretty crazy."

MGMT play a sold-out show tonight at The Mod Club (722 College St.). Doors at 7 p.m.
