Sample This

I sometimes hear from visitors to Toronto that there's nothing to do here. My response is "you just have to know where to look" and in this case look no further than blogTO. This weekend there'll be so much fun happening it could to be hard to chose where to go next.

Friday night is filled for sure. Indy Unlimited at Harbourfront starts things off funky with Muhtadi and the World Drummers early in the night, leading up to sound architect Matthew Herbert on the decks....or on the water bottles, or apples, or big macs, or whatever he can find to sample. After all, the man used 635 different noise making objects on his latest CD, according to Kurt Lennon on Amazon.com. Dare I tell you the concert is free (who's paying for this stuff?) and that even the goddess of sound and poetry, Bjork herself, calls Herbert a genius?

Good thing the night will still be young, there'll be plenty of time to get to Sonic to hear, in one room together, the beautiful house music of Andy Caldwell & vocalist Lisa Shaw (Herbert's even mixed one of her tracks). Andy's track "Brand New Day", that I discovered on CIUT way back in the day, still gets me started most days.

As one night flows into the next so do the sounds of sexy house. Nick Holder will be holding it down at Bird on College. If you can't find the dance floor make one yourself, or head to - the newly dubbed - Studio 99 where there's nothing but floor. For tech-house lovers it's a night of Fukhouse with my favourite locals Eric Downer (call him Face for short) and Ian Guthrie. Just hope you'll be able to keep up.
