Quintron and Miss Pussycat Destroy the Silver $

Last night I showed up at the Silver Dollar to find Toronto's No Dynamics getting the crowd all hot and ready for New Orleans one-man-band Quintron and his neon-clad vocalist Miss Pussycat. I didn't know what to expect, and was not at all ready for what we got. They reminded me of the B-52s and the White Stripes, which I guess means that their roots are very much in New Orleans jazz and blues music ... Only this band sounds like they've been zapped down from a bizarro planet that is just like New Orleans, or they're from New Orleans in the year 2072.

I know I already mentioned Miss Pussycat's outfit, but she was wearing this insane truck-stop waitress dress, only it was fluorescent green and had a big cartoon alligator on the front. Quintron wore a matching fluorescent button-down under a glittering black blazer. They looked insane.

While the band played amazing dance music, and were energetically delivering fun pop songs, they repeatedly thanked Toronto for its numerous New Orleans benefit shows. Quintron remarked that the first meal he got after Hurricane Katrina was from Canada, and Miss Pussycat listed off all the things she loves about our country. It was almost embarrassing, but mostly touching, and the dance party continued long after the bar was supposed to have closed. I left the club feeling like I'd been taught how to dance by the most rock 'n' roll children's television show that's ever existed.
