Rachel McAdams & The Weeknd get Oscar nominations

It's been a blockbuster year for the Weeknd. And now, the Scarborough native has earned his first Academy Award nomination along with fellow Torontonian Rachel McAdams.

The 2016 Oscar nominations were announced this morning and the Weeknd's "Earned It" from 50 Shades of Grey is now officially vying for best original song.

The Academy also recognized McAdam's work in Spotlight, which premiered at TIFF, nominating her for best supporting actress.

However, these two stars won't be the only ones representing Toronto in Los Angeles on February 28. Local filmmaker Adam Benzine's Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah is up for an award in the best documentary short subject category.

And as per usual, TIFF's People's Choice Award winner - the Canadian-Irish co-production Room - is one of the eight best picture nominees.

Film still of Spotlight.
