Toronto city council doesn't like the new police cars

When the Toronto Police Service revealed its new monochrome, black, white and grey cars, not everyone was pleased. Some say these emergency vehicles are now more difficult to spot, while others prefer the old, brighter colour scheme. Toronto city council seems to agree.

At yesterday's full council meeting, councillors voted 26-13 for a motion that asks the TPS to keep its current cars (the white, red and blue ones) on the road, pending further review.

The motion also asks the TPS to explain why it changed them in the first place and if a new colour scheme is required, council wants the TPS to initiate an "independent, professional study" to "determine the most appropriate colours and graphics for future police vehicles."

As CBC News reports, Councillor Michael Thompson put forward the motion. "What I actually see in terms of the policing particularly in these cars is that we're actually approaching an American model of policing where it's becoming more militaristic," said Thompson to CBC.
