Toronto taxis will protest during NBA All-Star Weekend
At the end of January, Toronto-area taxi drivers threatened to strike some time during the NBA All-Star weekend. Now, it looks likes the United Taxi Workers Association will attempt to disrupt traffic - as early as February 12 - to protest UberX's continued operation in the GTA.
The new United Taxi Workers Association met last night to plan its next steps. And, as the Toronto Star reports, Paul Sekhon, the head of this organization, said that the upcoming protest will be similar to the one that clogged up city streets in December.
Members of Toronto's taxi industry have been trying to shut down UberX, who they say is operating illegally in the city, for more than a year. Last week, city council voted against seeking an immediate injunction against the ride-sharing service.
