Toronto vote provincial election 2011

Ford Nation no more? How Toronto voted in the last three elections

Dalton McGuinty's Liberals came just shy of winning a majority government last night (assuming recounts don't change the picture), at least part of which has to do with the party's strong showing in Toronto. Although some predicted that so-called Ford Nation would help Tim Hudak take back some territory in the 416, that was early on in the campaign. In fact, it's quite possible that the reverse happened. With the mayor's approval rating in a free-fall leading into the 2012 budgetary process, Toronto voters in the provincial election steered clear of right-leaning PCs altogether. Of the 23 ridings in Toronto, not one is shaded blue in the map above, which depicts (as yet unofficially) how Toronto voted last night.

What exactly this means for the Ford administration is not yet clear, but the trend that saw the Conservatives make inroads in Toronto as part of the federal election appears already to have come to an end. In other words, Ford Nation may still exist in some capacity, but it's not the force it once was. Take a look at the maps below to see how Toronto's voted in the last three elections (provincial, federal, and municipal).

One of the keys to the Conservative majority in last May's federal election was the party's ability to win over a few Liberal strongholds in Toronto.
