Caribana Scotiabank Caribean Carnival

Caribana is now... the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival

The festival formerly known as Caribana has got a new name, and it's as corporate as can be. Let us welcome to existence the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival, a mouthful that one suspects will never be used except in press releases and media reports. Forced into the renaming process on account of the fact that the group that founded the festival owns the trademark on the name but is no longer affiliated with the event, when news broke that a new moniker was on the way, it's was a pretty good bet that it wasn't going to be an improvement.

But, hey, it's not like anyone's going to use it. Call it the SkyDome effect, but when something has a good name to begin with, it's tough to get the public to drop it — especially for reasons of trademark legalese. The festival — or, I suppose, carnival — is also due to release a new logo, but it has yet to be be revealed. We'll do an update when it's formerly unveiled.

So what you think? Does SCC have a chance at sticking?
