Gallery Space: Death and Double Openings

Nov 2nd - This week in the Gallery Space:

Toronto Free Gallery (660 Queen Street East) hosts two openings today.

First off, Room by Yam Lau featuring computer animation and video opens quietly (opting for a closing reception instead on Nov 25th) this afternoon.

Room explores one's routine and home through forms of spatial expression and presentation via video and 3-D animation.

Tonight, Ossuary 501 by Ione Thorkelsson, opens from 7-10pm. It will also run through til Nov 25th.

In this installation, we look at issues of mass public death - flood, epidemics, genocide, and war and how they affect our emotion and collective memory.

Tomorrow night at 8pm, YYZ Artists' Outlet (401 Richmond St. W. #140) also hosts a double opening with Effigy by California artist, DesirĂŠe Holman and Unwanted, Broken and Useless by Adrienne Spier.

Effigy includes four videos in which Holman creates "make-believe" worlds through life-sized dolls (full body masks). Through their actions we look at the fundamental dymanics of human relationships and private emotions that lurk behind our everyday masks.

Through Unwanted, Broken and Useless, Toronto artist, Adrienne Spier creates a "fictitious domestic space out of discarded and dismantled furniture". All the furniture is arranged in a way that viewers can interact with the space, re-structuring it as they like and giving it new purpose.

Through this large installation, Spier considers the notion of space being increasingly limited and mobility unlimited, creating a need for "compactable" and efficient possessions.

Both exhibits run til December 16th.
