Vegan takeout joint closes in Toronto after being open for about 7 months

A source for jackfruit and vegan mac n' cheese never planned to make their Toronto location permanent.

When Animal Liberation Kitchen moved into their original Riverside address, they signed a lease on a raw space next door in order to expand.

Mere weeks ago, they were notified in an email that the necessary permits and renovations needed to use the space wouldn't be going through.

Sensing something wasn't right, the Spasic family behind the tiny restaurant decided to drop the space altogether, making October 25 their last day.

ALK and the community surrounding them moved swiftly to ensure relocation. They'll be taking up residence where Tokyo Smoke once was on Broadview, thanks to a regular reaching out to the building, who in turn actually approached ALK themselves.

The new accommodations in a workspace mean earlier hours and more coffee and tea, but no weekends.

Veggie lovers need not despair, as the new location should be ready within the next couple weeks, and the old one is slated to be replaced by an Indian vegetarian restaurant.
