Toronto's newest Christmas Market is conveniently located in Nathan Phillips Square. Like the massive holiday extravaganza in the Distillery District, this one's inspired by European markets and it features an asssortment of vendors, making it easy for office dwellers and commuters to shop during lunch or after work.

However, it's not quite as robust as its contemporary on the city's east side. I wouldn't recommend planning a day around a visit to this market; rather, it's nice place to walk through and explore if you're already downtown.

Say you're heading to the Nutcracker? Catch a ride on the carousel before the show or grab some artisanal chai after braving the Christmastime crowds at the Eaton Centre.

The rides, stationed right outside City Hall, will probably delight little kids, or at least those who are young-at-heart. They look pariculary festive at night and if you're not prone to motion sickness, whirl around on the carousel, tea cups or the hurricane-like ride (also known as a smaller version of Wonderland's beloved Klockwerks).

If you want to impress that special someone, or would rather win prizes for those on your Christmas list, check out the carnival games. Keep in mind that proceeds go towards Epilepsy Toronto.Sure, there might be restaurants nearby, but why not take advantage of the opportunity to eat outside? The Polar Point Restaurant and Bar has lots of seating (and some heating!) with rich, warm food, like chili ($13), giant turkery legs ($16) and apple strudel ($6).

There's also a whole row of food trucks and vendors. Come hungry - after all, it is the holidays, so why not indulge a bit?

If you're going to go all out, you might as well try Heirloom's latest creation: cheesecake on a stick. This epic-looking treat comes in a few flavours, like the coconut cream pie with coconut cheesecake, milk chocolate, toasted coconut and vanilla caramel.

After you finish eating, check out some of the vendors. There are lots of kitschy gift ideas from local artisans and lots of yummy treats located among the rows of white tents.

Since this is all happening in Nathan Phillips Square, consider bringing your skates because what's more festive than twirling around with your friends and family the centre of the city?
