TTC Cuts Toronto Core Service Review

TTC cuts may be on the horizon

The next KPMG report on Toronto's core services, due out tomorrow, will outline a number of possible cuts to the TTC according to the Globe and Mail, the latest paper to receive an advance copy of the reports. Billed as the most contentious of the bunch, the consulting firm's upcoming report is expected to suggest the following areas as cut-worthy or ripe for privatization.

  • The Blue Night bus network
  • Privatization of some bus routes
  • Contracting of TTC maintenance to the private sector
  • The sale of TTC-owned parking lots

Of these suggestions, the elimination of late night buses is sure to be the most controversial. Service reductions on 41 routes (originally 48) earlier this year already caused a considerable stir, but the loss of Blue Night routes, one suspects, would generate even more ire on the part of passengers. As far as the privatization of bus routes go, this is an unlikely scenario thanks to the push to make the TTC an essential service back in March.

A closer look at the report, which also includes Toronto Police services, will follow once the document has been circulated. In the meantime, what do you think? Doesn't a city the size of Toronto require some form of limited public transportation in the wee hours?
