Morning Brew: February 2nd, 2009

What's happening in the GTA (and sometimes beyond):

The suspected shooter (who shocked the city by firing a bullet into the belly of a fellow subway rider at Osgoode Station on January 22nd) has turned himself in to police. Once your name and photo are posted to the public, I suppose your choices are reduced to turning yourself in, or high-tailing it to Mexico.

Toronto MP and Liberal party leader Michael Ignatieff is getting press in the US. He was given high praise and compared to Obama in a profile by the New York Times which was quickly set straight by the sarcasm/gossip site Gawker (although to get to both the NYT and Gawker pieces I had to search for them because the CityNews article doesn't link to the stories).

Toronto Hydro continues to comb the city in a concerted attempt to locate and eliminate "stray voltage" that has been shocking pets and kids on our streets. Since November, some 140 incidents have been reported to the power company, most of which have been found and fixed. But today, 600 workers are out there testing every handwell out there.

And two more fires this weekend in the Jane and Dundas area are believed to be arson. This brings the total number of fires to... a lot. Does the media reporting on this further entice the serial arsonist to commit more acts, or is media reporting of serial crime the right thing to do because it spreads awareness? Either way, this person must be caught.
