God Save the Queen?

This may overstep my boundaries as a Toronto blogger, but as tomorrow is Canada Day (and everything revolves around Toronto anyway), I feel compelled to share. As a nation, we will be 138 years old. Historically, we always move slowly with regards to our identity. It took until 1965 for us to fly our own flag and we didn't officially adopt "O Canada" until 1980. But now we're 'all growed up'. Is it too much to ask that we cut the cord to the British Monarchy and the House of Windsor? Can we stop reaching into our pockets and pulling out a fistful of Elizabeth II? She's a lovely lady and all, but are there no dead Canadians that we can laud? Trudeau, Douglas, McGee, even Mr. Dress Up (he might not be dead). Worse still, consider this: once she has gone to her regal throne in the sky, we'll be left with King Charles on the loonie! Then when you gather change from the sofa, you can bow and utter, "My Liege".

So tomorrow on Canada Day, go out and enjoy yourself. Head up to the cottage, check out Canada's Wonderland or watch the Jays play the Sox with a two-four and some friends. But come Monday, fire off an email to the "Royal" Canadian Mint. Tell them it's time for a change. (Sorry about that last one).
